PLANS for a multi-million pound refurbishment of Sleaford Leisure Centre have been given further enhancements.

At last Tuesday’meeting of North Kesteven District Council’s planning committee, members voted unanimously to allow further improvements to the centre, which will see the reception area extended.

The committee approved the remodelling after hearing that there had been no objections to the proposals and only minor modification required to satisfy Sleaford Navigation Trust, who asked that the canopy overhanging the river bank be designed so that it can be removed when they require access to the river as part of the River Slea restoration.

The building will be re-clad and will be given a new frontage incorporating a canopy and glazed entrance. There will also be a new splash zone water play facility for the under-threes.

Council leader Coun Marion Brighton said: “This package of work represents a significant enhancement and modernisation of a facility that has been at the heart of the community since 1872.

“It is fitting that 140 years on, and in an Olympic year, it remains so popular that we need to make these enhancements to meet the growing demands and expectations of users. Within a year we will have delivered a first-class facility for everyone to enjoy.”

Work is set to begin on the refurbishment in the Autumn. The leisure centre is scheduled to be closed from October to September.
