New owners take on Corn Exchange site

THE sites occupied by the former Coop Homemaker and Corn Exchange buildings have come under new ownership.

Much of the buildings, that overlook Sleaford Market Place, have stood empty and derelict for more than a decade. At one time they were owned by Peachy Investments of Jersey.

Now pub chain company J D Wetherspoon has been given the properties as part of a settlement between the company and another party.

Spokesman for Wetherspoons Eddie Gershon said: “It is purely commercial and Wetherspoon is looking to sell them to another party and not develop the properties themselves.”

The company already owns The Packhorse Inn on Northgate, which was formerly The Lion Hotel.

The Market Place properties include the neighbouring Indian and Italian restaurants on the ground floor, although these would not necessarily be affected.

Wetherspoons are currently in negotations over the property.

Sleaford-based property development company J Hodgson and Sons have long had detailed plans approved for the restoration and redevelopment of the site

Director Christopher Hodgson said negotiations were at a sensitive stage: “Our aspirations for the building are as they have always been, that the more interesting historic structures should be put back into good repair.”
