Penny Lane is a real hit with council tenants

The last of 46 new homes built by North Kesteven District Council in a pioneering response to meet local need have been completed.

The official opening of the 11 homes at Penny Lane, off Pound Road, in Martin, marks the fulfilment of three rounds of a £6.2m programme by NKDC. Two flats and nine houses have been built on a former piece of rough ground accessed by removing two older houses in a £1.1m project, jointly funded by the council and Government’s Homes and Communities Agency.

Six of the 11 have already been allocated ready to be occupied this month, with other people on the register being considered for the others.

As well as energy-saving solar water heating, air source heat pumps and extra insulation, these feature water butts, composters and measures to boost local wildlife.

Coun Brighton said: “The £550,000 we were awarded to half-fund this scheme was the very last amount we were able to secure from the Homes and Communities Agency, and we consider ourselves very lucky.” Since work is underway on five further new homes in Rowston and Billinghay funded entirely by the council in a commitment to continue improving and expanding its housing stock.

Kelly Howesman and her daughters Ellie-May and Sara-Anne are among the new tenants set to move in. Their new home allows them to stay in Martin, but move closer to their school, shops and family.

“We were over the moon to get one of these new houses. They’re really nice and I think we’ll be really happy here,” said Kelly.

Her mum Sue is the village’s tenant representative who said the council had done well to satisfy local demand while expanding opportunities for affordable housing.
