Sleaford MP Stephen Phillips welcomes £4million funding for road repairs

MP for Sleaford and North Hykeham Stephen Phillips has welcomed the confirmation of extra funding for highway maintenance in Lincolnshire that was announced in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement.

The county will receive an additional amount of over £4 million next year, with another £2 million the year after.

The funding could be used for improvements such as road resurfacing, maintenance or repairs to bridges, or repairs to infrastructure damaged by flooding. It comes in addition to the £3 billion that the Government is already providing to English local authorities for highways maintenance.

Mr Phillips said: “Our road network is something we rely on greatly in Lincolnshire, as so many of us use our cars to get around. I am delighted that this extra funding has been allocated by the Government for the much-needed maintenance of our network.”

Funding allocations were published today by Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin and it is part of £22.5 million allocated to the East Midlands for essential maintenance to renew, repair and extend the life of roads in England.

Patrick McLoughlin said: “This extra money will support economic growth and development by helping local authorities in the East Midlands to get the best out of their local road networks.

“This funding can be spent on measures to bring smoother, safer and more reliable journeys to the travelling public whether they are commuting to work or taking the children to school.”

In order to help local residents see where this money has been spent it will be a condition of the funding that local authorities commit to publishing a short statement on their websites at the end of each financial year setting out what and where this additional funding has been spent.
