Spill delays celebrations

A COMMUNITY’S Diamond Jubilee celebrations were held up on Saturday when half the village was blocked off by emergency services called out to deal with a chemical spill.
A road was closed for part of the afternoon when it was discovered 60 gallons of fungicide had leaked from an agricultural sprayer.
According to Steffi Wilkinson, of Little Hale, a student with the Lincolnshire Young Journalist Academy, it was soon established by a hazardous chemical officer that the liquid on the road was non-harmful, but not until five fire engines attended from Sleaford, Billingborough, Metheringham and Grantham, as well as police and an ambulance as a precaution in what had been classed as a major incident.
It was explained that as it was deemed a major incident, emergency services had to follow set procedure.
Nearby residents were advised to stay inside while the spill was checked and zorb (small, green granules) was put on it to absorb it and it was swept away.
Little Hale’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations did still go ahead in the afternoon despite the disruption.
More than 200 people were able to enjoy the festivities at Parva House in the village.
