Sleaford’s reputation as a great place to eat was enhanced at the East Midlands Food and Drink Awards last week.

The glittering awards ceremony was held at Greetham Valley Hotel, Golf and Conference Centre, near Grantham.

Leading the charge for Sleaford was town centre eatery the India Garden nominated as a finalist and coming runner up in the best Indian restaurant category.

Another local winner was Indian restaurant Bindi, of Grantham, run by Sleaford restaurateurs Muhammed and Ella Karim who won the best special event caterer category.

The awards were co-hosted by the Standard’s managing editor Paul Richardson and celebrity chef Aldo Zilli. More than 180 people from across the region attended.

India Garden properietor Nadim Aziz said a big thank you to all his customers for their support through to the final and to the Sleaford Standard: “Without my customers who supported me through to the final I could not have reached this stage. It was a brilliant night, full of people from around the county.”

Mr Richardson said: “These awards are a testimony to all of the fantastic places there are to eat and drink in the Lincolnshire/Rutland and Greater Peterborough areas – all winners and finalists should be very proud of their achievements.”

Mr Zilli said: “This has been an excellent night. The people here really care about food and customer service.

“They are my kind of people. I only hope that during these tough times they stick to their principles and customers reward them with their loyalty.”

Mr Zilli, who has written 10 cookery books and just finished a new television series, said he sold all his restuarants in March of this year.

However he was now back in his whites: “Because it is a drug.”

Organised by East Midland Newspapers Ltd, the awards competition began in July this year and ran in 12 weekly newspapers across the East Midlands.

Winners were those which received the most votes from their customers and readers throughout all newspaper titles. Thousands of votes were received.
