THE Sleaford area is preparing to go mad with patriotic fervour and join nationwide celebrations to mark the Queen’s 60-years reign.

To commemorate the Diamond Jubilee, villages, community groups and friends and neighbours are planning to throw on the red, white and blue and raise a glass or two to Queen Elizabeth II.

Newly-elected Mayor of Sleaford Trevor Mayfield is looking forward to what promises to be a memorable weekend.

He said: “We have a number of street parties going on in and around the town and I’ve seen a lot of bunting. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us and everyone will enjoy a great weekend.”

At the Standard we have received a huge response from groups, organisations and individuals who are holding tea parties, community lunches, street parties and fun days to mark the occasion.

For full details of all the local events that we know of see page 10. If there are other events we haven’t listed, please call us on 01529 413646 and we will try to cover them over the weekend, if possible.

Nationwide, people will be making the most of the extended Bank Holiday and Big Jubilee Lunches are expected to be held all over he UK.

Her Majesty is only the second British Monarch in history to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee, the other being Queen Victoria in 1897.

l We will be compiling a Jubilee photo special in the Standard on June 13. Our photographers will be covering as many events as possible but, if they are unable to get to yours, please send photographs to rachel.grafton@jpress.co.uk
