Jailed husband beat up wife in jealous rage
A MAN who fractured his wife’s eye socket during a violent argument was jailed for 15 months last week.
Paul O’Malley, 43, admitted causing grievous bodily harm to his partner during a row at their former matrimonial home in Ropsley.
Lincoln Crown Court heard O’Malley became jealous after his wife had stayed out with friends the previous night. The couple had both been drinking when O’Malley turned violent.
Phil Howes, prosecuting, said O’Malley pulled a chain from around his wife’s neck, leaving two scratches, and tried to remove her wedding ring. He then threw her across the sofa and pulled her hair.
Mr Howes added: “She did not see what happened next, but describes feeling a shocking blow to the right side of her eye.”
The court was told O’Malley told his wife to stop “whining”, but then went to get some ice when he saw the injury. His wife fled the house later telling police she had never felt so scared.
Philip Farr, mitigating, said the couple were now reconciled but O’Malley was also waiting to be sentenced for a second assault on his wife where he pulled her over during a night out.
Mr Farr told the court: “The real reason for this assault was jealousy on behalf of Mr O’Malley and his inability to control his emotions.”
O’Malley, now of Tallington, admitted causing grievous bodily harm on March 28.
Passing sentence Judge Sean Morris described the incident as a “pretty sustained attack”:
“You pulled a chain from around her neck, leaving marks, you shouted at her, and attempted to take her wedding ring from her.
“It is a man beating a woman. As a result of that she was off work for three months and had double vision.
“People who beat up women to this extent must expect a custodial sentence.”
