“Mindless” damage at Rec’s playground

Thousands of pounds worth of metal cabling has been vandalised in the play area in Boston Rod Recreation ground, depriving children on half term with their favourite play equipment.
Offenders cut the cabling on the zip wire and the four-person basket swing on Saturday night, rendering both useless and leaving the destroyed metal hanging dangerously on the frames.
Sleaford Town Council have removed the damaged equipment for safety reasons, and now councillors will be going to the Services Committee today (Wednesday) who have responsibility for the town’s play area, to work out the costs of replacing the equipment - it is thought that it will run into thousands of pounds.
Shelagh Macintyre of Sleaford Town Council said: “Two pieces of equipment can now not be used thanks to vandalism. We have had to remove the remainder of the equipment for safety reasons. I don’t know why someone would do this.”
Now the Town Councillors are appealing to anyone who may have seen someone in the area acting suspiciously at that time to get in touch with the police, as the equipment used to cut the thick cabling is thought to be very heavy duty.
Gary Titmus, chairman of the Services Committee, said: “The Town Council work hard to provide the people of Sleaford with play equipment, the whole council is really angry that such a mindless act of vandalism has deprived the town of the opportunity to use it.
“We now have got to see what the situation is and need to think about how, and if, we can afford to replace the equipment. We can’t promise anything.
“This is a mindless act of vandalism against the people of Sleaford, they have paid their money for this equipment and the council just looks after it for them. It is an attack on the people themselves.
“We are really upset about this and we are doing everything we can to stop it from happening again. We are working with the PCSOs and just hope the other equipment won’t be damaged.”
