Police are beating the metal thieves
LINCOLNSHIRE Police are turning the tide in the fight against metal theft.
Figures this year show a 27.7 per cent reduction in metal theft crime over the first six months of 2012, compared to the same period last year.
Last year, countless churches and other buildings in the Sleaford area and other parts of the county had lead stripped from their roof.
Thieves also caused disruption with the theft of cable from electricity stations and even railway lines.
This year, the county force has been pro-active in tackling the crime and catching the criminals, while raising awareness to increase security and encourage reports from the public.
Scrap metal dealers are now working together with police and requesting photographic identification from customers.
This helps when investigating crimes and also makes it harder for criminals to dispose of stolen metal.
Sergeant Marc Gee, based at Sleaford police station, said: “We are determined to build on our initiatives to make a difference in respect of this blight on our communities.
“Some of the offences have seen the theft of parts of our heritage that can never be properly replaced.
“We will continue to prioritise metal theft to reduce the figures even further, but this can only be done through the help of the general public.”
