Rock throwers endanger lives

YOUTHS throwing objects at train windows are risking people’s lives.

British Transport Police are investigating after two fast moving trains passing through the Sleaford area were struck by rocks within days of each other.

The first incident happened at around 2.55pm on Thursday, January 12 when a rock was thrown at the Nottingham to Skegness train as it passed through Ancaster, smashing straight through a window and hitting a passenger on the head. An ambulance was called and the victim, a man from Croft, was left with a lump and reddening to his head but he was able to continue with his with journey.

Then on Monday, January 16, a concrete slab, about 20cm in length, was thrown at a passing train at Honington level crossing at 7.45pm.

Although the slab didn’t hit anyone on this occasion, a window was smashed and covered a passenger with broken glass.

British Transport Police say they will be stepping up patrols around the area to catch the offenders. They are appealing for anyone who may have information about either of these incidents to come forward.

BTP Inspector Graham Bridges, said: “These types of incidents are very serious and can cause not only damage to trains but injuries to passengers. Luckily no-one here was seriously injured. I would warn students in the area who think playing near the railway is fun that they are not only risking their lives but also a criminal record.”

Anyone with information should contact the British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, quoting incident B15/NEA of January 18, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
