Twenty years for attackers
A South Kyme man, was one of three men who carried out a savage attack leaving their victim unconscious before robbing him of his possessions were given jail sentences totalling 20 years at Lincoln Crown Court on Monday.
David Sykes, 25, of South Parade, South Kyme, admitted both robbery and inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and was jailed for five years.
Christopher Skipworth, 25, of Main Ridge East, Boston, and David Males, 24, formerly of Boston but now of no fixed address, each admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent and were found guilty by a jury of robbery as a result of the incident on 16 June 2011. They both denied robbery. Skipworth, who admitted a separate offence of possession of a meat cleaver in Boston town centre, was jailed for eight years. Males was jailed for seven years.
The three lured their victim from his home in Skegness on the pretext of meeting him outside the Nat West Bank on Algitha Road in the resort but when he arrived he was subjected to a savage attack.
Michael Cranmer-Brown, prosecuting, said the attackers, who had travelled from Boston, asked the victim to go down an alleyway near to the bank and he was given a can of beer.
But then they turned on the man who was knocked unconscious after being struck on the head with an empty vodka bottle.
Mr Cranmer-Brown said the first blow was delivered by David Males with his friend Christopher Skipworth following up by punching the man eight times. Sykes also became involved delivering a number of blows when the victim lay on the ground.
Mr Cranmer-Brown said “Skipworth was holding the man down by putting his foot on his neck. Males hit him four times about the chest and back with a pool cue.
“The victim had lost consciousness. When he came round his jewellery, his mobile phone, his wallet and his watch were missing.
“He got up and went to the reception of a nearby solicitors’ office for help and then collapsed.”
The man suffered two broken ribs and serious internal injuries which left him in intensive care. He spent 12 days in hospital before he was allowed home. The court heard their victim had moved away from Boston after suffering bullying.
