Artsmark Gold awards for local primary schools

A NUMBER of schools in the Sleaford area are among the 1,580 across England which have been successful in achieving an Artsmark award.

Three have achieved the highest accolade, Artsmark Gold, reflecting a significant increase on previous years.

Rauceby, Cranwell and Brant Broughton primary schools have successfully earned gold awards, while Metheringham school was also successul in applying for an Artsmark.

Artsmark is the national programme that enables schools to celebrate, strengthen and deliver rich and high quality arts provision. By achieving Artsmark, a school shows its commitment to providing a high quality arts and cultural offer for children and young people.

For both Rauceby and Cranwell it was a re-accreditation of their existing awards but this time earning top honours.

Headteacher of Rauceby School, Richard Thompson said it was something very important to them but they had not expected to receive gold: “There is a lot of arts going on during the school day. It is a way to highlight the extraordinary talents and effort that go into school life.”

They stage theatre productions in school and won a prize at this year’s Colsterworth Festival. There are lots of art and craft clubs and opportunities for pupils to shine in different areas

The application is an extremely thorough procedure consisting of the creation of a detailed portfolio of what children experience while at school. This process is then supported with an inspection from the Arts Council who interview staff, governors and children.

Headteacher Chris Wilson said: “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of the children within the school and especially Louise Cousins for her hard work preparing the portfolio and for the visit.”
