Governors' chairman resigned to defeat

'A SAD day for Billinghay' was how a parish councillor described plans to close the Lafford High School in 2010.

At a meeting of Billinghay Parish Council last Monday, councillors had the opportunity to ask questions of chairman of governors Derek Daniels, and Lincolnshire County Councillor Patricia Bradwell who represents the ward.

Mr Daniels told the council the decision was not final but admitted 'realistically, it is going to close'. He said: "We need to maintain 400 pupils so that we can offer a range of curriculum. That is not possible going on the school numbers and the forecast numbers in the future."

The school currently has 262 on its roll.

Mr Daniels added: "The school was one of the most improved schools in the country last year but still parents did not want to send their children there. This has been on the cards for the last five or six years."

Parish councillor Richard Wood said: "The day the Lafford closes will be a sad day for Billinghay. I don't think anyone wants this to happen."
