Inspectors heap high praise on hospital school

Teachers and staff are celebrating a glowing Ofsted report on their school.

The Ash Villa School at Greylees has been rated as good with outstanding features in their latest report, which described the progress in personal development for pupils as ‘outstanding’.

It also commented on the pupils rapidly gaining in confidence and becoming more independent in making decisions, as well as making good progress in English and maths. Most of the pupils return successfully to mainstream school.

Ash Villa School is a hospital school for young people who are undergoing an inpatient assessment of their emotional or mental health.

The report heaped praise on the school’s teaching staff, observing that they aim high when setting learning targets which helps pupils achieve well. The school’s partnerships with mainstream schools and health professionals to support students’ needs was also highly commended in the Ofsted report.

Headteacher Neil Barton was described as an ‘exceptional leader’. The report said he was very well supported by the senior teacher and has ‘very dedicated’ staff, with the governing body making a ‘strong contribution to the leadership of the school’.

Mr Barton credited the whole school community for creating a successful learning environment and for the outcome of the report.

He said: “The success of Ash Villa School is as a result of the hard work and dedication of a team of exceptional professionals working closely together towards fulfilling a shared vision.”

The report also made suggestions for how the school could become outstanding all around, including incorporating learning aims into all lessons that help pupils reach their weekly targets.
