TWO leading engineers delivered this year’s Whittle Lecture at RAF Cranwell.
The lecture is given annually at Whittle Hall is in memory of Sir Frank Whittle, who invented the jet engine and who was a cadet at the RAF College Cranwell in the 1920s. He returned to the station later to test his invention.
The lecture is organised by the RAF Cranwell branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society, the Lincolnshire Network of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Lincolnshire branch of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
This year’s subject, ‘Towards a Silent Aircraft’, was presented by Professor Dame Ann Dowling and Dr Tom Hynes from the Engineering Department at the University of Cambridge.
They described a design for a future airliner, whose noise would be almost imperceptible outside the perimeter of an urban airport and whose fuel consumption would be 25 per cent less than the best current aircraft.
