AS the opening of the Olympics is now just days away, a Sleaford school has paid tribute to the prestigious event.

Church Lane primary school has been celebrating the up-coming London 2012 Games by holding an Olympic Week in school.

During the week the pupils were learning about the different countries that will be represented in the Olympics, as well as looking in detail at a number of Olympic sports.

The week began with an opening ceremony, where the children in each class found out what country and sport they would be looking at throughout the week.

As well as learning about Olympic sports, the children were able to try out some of them. The Year Three class went to South View Riding School at Silk Willoughby for horse riding lessons and Barry Cooper from the Lincoln Judo Academy came in to teach the pupils the basics of his sport.

Years One and Two then went along to Jubilee Park in Woodhall Spa to develop their swimming skills, and the Year Four and Six pupils travelled to Tallington Lakes to try out kayaking.

Finally on the Friday, the whole school took part in a closing ceremony where all the classes paraded through the hall with flags and banners representing their countries, some gave a short display of the sport they were learning about.

The final part of the ceremony saw three children from each class receive an Olympic medal for showing Olympic values during the week.

Organiser and PE co-ordinator Emily Dix said: “It was a fantastic week, a great opportunity for all the children to try something new, and the staff enjoyed it as well.”
