A SLEAFORD school has been marking its 130th anniversary with a series of events over the last month.

Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Primary School started life in the old church hall off Jermyn Street, even before the current church was built.

It was built and dedicated on June 1 1882 and to mark the anniversary the current pupils of the school
attended a special mass in the church before leading a procession through the middle of town with banners, which caused quite a
stir said headteacher Sarah
Weldon.

Last week the school set aside the week for celebrations and held a mass with the parish priest Father Michael Bell at school.

Mrs Weldon said: “We have built a peace garden on the field with a circular patio area with a path and plants. Every member of staff and pupils and former members of staff and pupils have each decorated a cobble stone with their name and the date they joined the school, then laid them along the edges of the path.

“As new members of staff and children join us they will add their pebbles and it will grow over the years.”

The peace garden will be used as a quiet area for staff to take their classes during the year for outdoor lessons and acts of worship. The area was blessed by Father Michael last week.

Yesterday (Tuesday) the school had planned a sports day with barbecue lunch and summer fete along with Olympic themed activities for families but the rainy weather meant the event was brought inside, with indoor sports during the day and stalls in the hall at the end of the day.

Staff have put together a time line display of the school and events with photos dating back to the 1970s and 1980s. The school moved to its present site on The Drove in 1974.
