Students say Bonjour at language workshop

FUTURE linguists visited their local RAF base to see just how beneficial foreign languages can be for them.
Over 50 Year Nine and Ten students from schools across Lincolnshire, including Sleaford’s St George’s Academy, attended a language workshop at Daedalus Officers’ Mess at RAF College Cranwell.
The event, a joint initiative by Cranwell’s Community Careers Liaison Officer, Sqn Ldr Tamzin Keenlyside and Sarah Fagan, of Business Language Champions, aimed to encourage the learning of languages and to highlight the range of career opportunities to language students.
The workshop also gave the students the opportunity to meet Flight Sergeant Tim Smith, who speaks Russian, Arabic, Pharsi, French, Spanish and Dari and serves with 51 Sqn at RAF Waddington.
He told the students how he left school with few qualifications, including French O Level and did a Russian course at North Luffenham, where he discovered a gift for languages.
He said: “I wanted to show the students that not having a language degree hadn’t held me back. If they have an aptitude for languages at whatever level then there’s a whole host of careers available to them.”
Sally Fagan said that she was keen to introduce to the students a range of people who are actually using a language in their chosen profession. She said: “Holding the workshop at RAF College Cranwell is a fantastic opportunity for them and a number have already expressed an interest in language careers in the Armed Forces.”
