STUDENTS looking to continue their A-level studies can now do so at their village high school.

Sir William Robertson High School in Welbourn is now able to offer a sixth form for A-level students starting in September after years of discussion and planning.

Head of Sixth Form, Seb Mann, said: “We have been building up to a sixth form for a number of years to be able to provide a viable further education.

“Looking at our recent GCSE results, with 88 per cent of pupils achieving five or more A* to C grades, which is the requirement for A levels and 180 students in the Year 11 group, we can successfully provide a sixth form.”

A lot of time and effort has been spent by the school researching which A-level subjects they should provide. They have taken advice from the country’s top universities on which courses they look for in prospective students and which would give their pupils the best opportunities.

The school’s Sixth Form Committee have also been researching what it is that students would want from their sixth form, from what they would like to see in the common room to which new IT facilities they want.

Mr Mann added: “Of course it is fantastic to have our students involved in the creation of the sixth form.

“It is a powerful message for the students to be able to say that they were involved in creating their own sixth form and this will be an advantage to them when it comes to applying for university.”

Sir William Robertson will be holding a Sixth Form Open Evening on Thursday, February 23. from 6.30pm onwards, and all students looking to join the sixth form in September are welcome to come along, including those from other schools.

Headteacher Mark Guest said: “This is fantastic news for everyone at Sir William Robertson. The announcement was greeted by cheers from the pupils when the news was given to them in their assemblies.”
