Youth cafe Lottery bid

THE organisers of Sleaford’s new pregnancy advice centre are now proposing to launch a youth cafe to serve young people and families.

The new scheme is being led by the Alternatives Advice Centre based at Clover House, Boston Road, having picked up on the lack of things for Sleaford teenagers to do and the need to steer young people away from anti-social behaviour by involving them in positive community projects.

Manager Angeline Hennessy-Thompson said they are working with the town’s youth centre which currently has very limited opening times and is less attractive to older teens. The youth cafe would be for year tens upwards, held in a spare room at the Clover House premises as somewhere to meet and relax, with transport laid on to outlying villages.

They are still researching young people’s needs in the area with a questionnaire going out to schools.

They intend to bid for £200,000 from the Big Lottery fund to sustain the project for five years, paying for a full-time youth worker, it would be mainly manned by volunteers with help from young people. There would be support programmes for young people, training and careers guidance as well as young parenting advice. “If there is a need for it, we will provide it,” explained Mrs Hennessy-Thompson. They just need letters of support to pass on to the Lottery fund.

If the funding bid goes ahead they could be up and running for this winter.
