Medals of honour

OFFICERS from South Yorkshire Police wore their medals with pride when they competed in front of the Queen.

Four officers from the force took part in the Royal Windsor Horse Show at Windsor Castle and attended the Royal Diamond Jubilee Pageant to mark the Queen’s jubilee.

PC Paul Brown, PC Julie Bradshaw and PC Tracey Brown from the mounted department and Detective Constable Debbie Renwick represented the force in various events.

The officers competed against members of Her Majesty the Queen’s military, members of other police saddle clubs and the best of civilian riders competing in the traditional disciplines of tentpegging and skill at arms as well as show jumping.

Each of the foursome competed on their own horse, in their own time and at their own expense.

PC Paul Brown came second in the individual tentpegging event and also finished seventh in skill at arms using a sword, lance and revolver. PCs Julie Bradshaw and Tracey Brown and DC Debbie Renwick competed against 41 other police and military teams in the show jumping and finished eighth team, taking part in a jump-off event in front of the Queen.

The four officers were presented with their Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medals prior to event by Deputy Chief Constable Bob Dyson, which they wore with pride when competing. Serving officers with over five years experience are eligible to receive the medal.

PC Paul Brown said: “Despite the pressure of the competition the team put extra effort into the turnout of the horses and the kit before parading.”

“We were all immensely proud to represent the force, especially when we all walked past the Royal box and saluted the Queen as our names were read out under the South Yorkshire Police announcement.”
