Opposition growing against substation

Opposition is already growing against plans by a power company to route cabling from an offshore wind farm to a new substation near a Sleaford area village.

RWE NPower Renewables plan to install the Triton Knoll offshore wind farm off the Lincolnshire coast and have unveiled plans to run underground cable ashore at Anderby Creek, on to Skegness before heading to a choice of three locations at Bicker Fen, already the site of a major wind farm, to hook it up to the National Grid.

A consultation process has been launched to get public feedback about the proposals which would include a 50 acre substation site at the fen.

Chairman of neighbouring Little Hale Parish Council has already expressed his personal disapproval. Paul Ireland said: “I was talking to the vice-chairman who is the nearest land and property owner to it. We are not happy with these proposals. Why put 60km of underground cabling all the way from Anderby Creek?”

He was sure the scheme would affect residents on the fen and supported the county council’s stance against more wind farms. He said: “The turbines themselves do not offend me in any way but they are proposing a 50 acre construction down at Bicker Fen rising up to 45 feet in height and it will have quite a visual impact in such a flat area and screening will be difficult.”

The Bicker Fen consultation event takes place on March 6 in the village hall from 3-7pm.
