Recycling centres to remain open

FOLLOWING a widespread outcry at a proposal to close waste recycling centres at Whisby and Leadenham, Lincolnshire County Council has done a u-turn.

A recommendation is to be made to the council’s executive committee in March to keep both recycling centres open.

More than 130 phone calls, letters and emails were received by the council from residents in support of the two recycling centres, as well as a petition.

Local parish and town councils within the areas, as well as local district councillors, were invited to participate in the decision-making process by sharing their views with county council officers and councillors on January 30.

Coun Lewis Strange, executive member responsible for waste services and green issues and vice chairman of the Lincolnshire Waste Partnership, said: “I am absolutely delighted that the tenders that came back mean that I’m able to recommend that Whisby and Leadenham household waste recycling centres remain open for residents to use.

“We had such tremendous response from local people and have listened carefully to what they have told us. It’s clear that the recycling centres are close to their hearts.

“We have one of the best recycling rates in the country, with residents recycling nearly 53 per cent of their waste, compared to a national average of 42 per cent, at our 13 household waste recycling centres and through the excellent kerbside collections provided by the district councils.

“We remain committed to finding ways of encouraging people to recycle all they can.”

The recommendation to keep both recycling centres open will be made at Environmental Scrutiny Committee on March 2 and also at the executive on March 6, when a final decision is expected to be made.

The council has to make £125m in savings between April 2011 and March 2014.
