A team from the Environment Agency was called in to remove a tree that had fallen into the River Slea, upstream of Haverholme Lock, causing a potential flood risk.

Operations Field Team Leader Debbie Sylvester said: “Fallen trees could collect further debris, block the channel, and slow the water’s flow, so when we become aware of a situation like this where the tree could significantly impact on the flow of the river, our specially-trained operational teams will remove it.”

The clearance took a team of four staff in dry suits with chainsaws and handtools five hours to complete. The trunk and branches were cut up and winched ashore and stacked in the woods, where they will provide wildlife habitat
