NOSTALGIA: Pumping iron in Sleaford in 1954

Sleaford Standard reader Jim Green, now living in South Africa, contacted us after looking through his memorabilia.

He said: “I found a photograph taken, I think around 1954, of the Sleaford Weight Lifting Club. We met in a room in Carre Street that was originally Frank Graves’ upholstery shop.”

He can still remember most of the names: from left - (back row) Tony Maxey, John Holderness, visitor ?, Jim Green, Gerry Cottrel, (front row) ?, Bill Turner, in the centre Frank Lakey the instructor, Les Short and Pete Newton.

In the centre is the club mascot but he does not remember his name.

“I appreciate what Frank did for us as a coach and his coaching methods that put me in good stead in later years when I took over as athletics sprint coach at the well known Wanderers Sporting Club in Johannesburg for which I served for many years,” he added.
