Follow a path in honour of war-time heroes or ramble along a wildlife trail at an
upcoming walking festival.

A series of special interest walks are offered at this year’s South Lincolnshire Walking Festival (SLWF).

Organised by South Kesteven District Council and Heritage Lincolnshire, the festival will celebrate the history and heritage of the area.

It takes place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday between September 25 and October 31 – with free guided walks across South and North Kesteven, Boston and South Holland.

Beverley Gormley, Heritage Lincolnshire cultural events officer, said: “This is an area jam-packed with heritage and history and we want to show off those hidden gems to local people and visitors.”

Routes range from walks retracing district aviation heritage links to those following Newton’s footsteps.

There are 76 guided walks led by organisations such as The Ramblers, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, Woodland Trust and the RSPB.

There are three aviation related routes. Twyford Woods, formerly RAF North Witham, offers a ramble along the runways that saw American D-Day pathfinders head for France, ‘On a Wing and a Prayer’ is around Caythorpe and finishes at St Vincent’s Church, a permanent shrine to airborne forces throughout the years.
