The Sleaford Half Marathon returned to town as its base after many years of being held in Cranwell and attracted 392 finishers.

All received a medal and T-shirt for their efforts having started on Boston Road outside Eslaforde Park.

The runners followed a route which took in part of Sleaford, Kirkby La Thorpe, Evedon, Ewerby and Howell before returning to the football ground.

First athlete to complete the course was Tim Hartley from Darcy Fitness Athletics in a superb time of 1.10.49. The first Sleaford Strider was John Siddens in 4th place in 1.19.10. Not far behind in 1.23.26 was the first female, from Heanor Running Club, Debbie Mason.

The event, organised by Sleaford Striders, was seen as a great success, with support from Sleaford Quality Foods, Specsavers of Sleaford, Lincolnshire Co-Op, Lincolnshire Runner, Mountain Skips, Sleaford Sports Association and Shrub and Grub.

Striders’ chairman, Bill Rayner said: “A lot of effort went into organising the half marathon, from designing a new course, obtaining marshals and attracting nearly 400 runners to the town.

“I believe this to have been very worthwhile, with positive feedback and the opportunity for spectators to see a large race in our town and villages.”

He added: “It was necessary to close roads for the safety of the runners and I apologise if any inconvenience was caused and thank everyone for their support on the day.”

In addition to the main event, a 3k fun run attracted 74 men, women and children to enjoy the opportunity to run on a closed road in safe conditions.

Plans are already underway for next year’s event but runners could still race locally in July at the Heckington Show, where a 10 mile race takes place, and in August the Scredington 10k race is open for entries.
