Cash award for garden project

AN area of ground at the rear of The Foyer in Sleaford is transforming the lives of a local mental health group, as a result of a £2300 cash grant awarded by the Mental Health Prevention Fund.

Materials, tools, seeds and turf will turn what was once wasteland at the rear of The Foyer, on Eastgate, into a tranquil and relaxing space for members of Beyond The Blues.

Physical activities, such as gardening, are recognised as being helpful in managing the symptoms of mild to moderate depression and anxiety.

While working on the garden, members of the Sleaford Garden Project will also gain a range of useful key skills that could benefit other areas of their lives, as well as enjoying the social aspect of team working.

Beyond The Blues chairman Maurice Sentance said: “The garden will be a wonderful place to sit and to relax, and it will help teach people how to grow simple salad crops, plants and flowers.”

Up to a dozen people will be working on the garden project, many of whom live in Sleaford or in the surrounding villages.

Mr Sentance added: “Stephen Morley and Graham Sampson, in particular have worked hard to get the project going and shaping its design.”
