A NEW series of sessions for young people wanting to try canoeing this summer has got off to a great start.

Slea Paddlers canoe club is running six sessions on the River Slea with funding from Sport England’s Sportivate scheme to encourage local teenagers to try a new and exciting sport.

Paul Pattinson, Slea Paddlers’ Sportivate co-ordinator, said they had received a tremendous response from people interested in taking part proving there was a demand locally. He added: “We had a good take-up and only had one fail to turn up out of the first group.

“As they were beginners we spent some time with them on the bank showing how to hold a paddle, so it was easier to control the session as the river was flowing quite quickly from all the rainfall. We got them paddling and playing games on the river by the end of the afternoon.”

They will concentrate on a different technique each week such as turning or reversing and they were all keen to return for the next session.
