Former victims can help others

SURVIVORS of domestic abuse in Lincolnshire are being asked to help other victims escape a life of fear and isolation.

An online survey has been launched for them to offer their views on what could encourage more victims to report domestic violence and leave abusive relationships sooner. It’s available at www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/EscapingDomesticAbuse

It’s estimated one in four women and one in six men experience domestic abuse at some time in their lives, but only 25 per cent of these crimes are actually reported.

Karen Shooter from Lincolnshire County Council’s domestic abuse service said: “People who have escaped domestic violence are in the best position to help others do the same. Their knowledge and experience is vital to someone who wants to leave an abusive relationship but doesn’t know how to – or is too scared.”

In Lincolnshire, 9,363 incidents of domestic abuse were reported to the police last year. If you or someone you know needs help, call the National Domestic Abuse helpline on 0808 2000 247 or visit www.domesticabuselincolnshire.com for more information. In an emergency call 999.
