WITH health experts fearing an explosion of child obesity in this country on the same lines as that in the USA, a Heckington teenager has been commended for her impressive weight loss after losing over two stone in a few months.

Bethany Gilliatt, 15, has won the coveted Slimming World Young Slimmer of the Year award after losing an impressive 2st 7lbs in just six months.

She joined the Heckington Slimming World group in January with her mum Jo as her confidence had been knocked severely due to her size.

She said: “I was really nervous the first time I went to the group, I was embarrassed about how big I was and I thought everyone would judge me for being overweight at such a young age.

“But I couldn’t have been more wrong, everyone was really friendly and welcoming. I settled in quickly and I’ve made lots of friends – of all ages. I love going and seeing everyone every week now.”

Beth, a pupil at St George’s Academy in Sleaford, lost the weight by following Slimming World’s Free2Go healthy eating plan, which includes meals full of healthy food which keeps members feeling fuller for longer, using items like fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, poultry, fish, eggs and fat free dairy.

She explained: “The eating plan was completely different from what I’d expected. I thought losing weight meant not eating very much or cutting out my favourite foods. Now I eat so many delicious meals without having to weigh or measure, and being hungry isn’t a worry.”

She added: “I love being able to wear the same clothes as my friends and enjoy going out with them more now.”

Mickala Day, who runs the group, said: “Everyone in the Heckington group is so proud of Bethany. She’s a huge inspiration. She’s learned healthy habits that will stay with her for life so worrying about her weight is definitely a thing of the past.”

Meetings at Heckington Slimming World group are held on Wednesdays between 5.30pm and 7pm at the Sports and Social Club on Howell Road. For more information, visit www.slimmingworld.com or call Mickala on 07780 912367.
