Chris Degnan sprung the surprise ‘re-proposal’ to his wife of eight years at Sleaford Leisure Centre, where they have been losing their weight, on the 11th anniversary of when they first met – September 17.

Chris, 31, explained he and Emma, 27, both feel like ‘new people’, so getting married again was a perfect celebration.

Chris said the team at the centre, and particularly personal trainer Tom Oakley, have helped them both to make the necessary changes in their lifestyle. The couple, who run The Griddle snack bar on East Road, joined on February 5 this year after Chris attended hospital in February and turned down gastric surgery to lower his weight from 27st 9lb. He said: “They scared the life out of me and that was when I joined the gym. It was a lot to take in but I needed to do something.”

Over the next four months he lost 8st 9lb - more than the weight he would have lost with surgery. To date he has lost 11 stone and plans to get down to 14 stone. He said: “I have been a big guy for most of my life but certainly since quitting smoking three years ago a lot of weight has gone on.”

He admitted never being near a gym before and nervously started doing 20 minutes on a treadmill. Emma joined to show support and has gone from 13st 3lb to 11st 7lb.

Chris said he won 10 hours of free coaching from personal trainer Tom Oakley after being challenged to lose 39lbs in 39 days. Emma used Tom too and within six weeks they had lost three stones.

He said: “I was classed as pre-diabetic but now I’m completely in the clear. I don’t have sleep apnoea anymore and don’t snore.”

Chris said he has been planning the ‘re-proposal’ for two months and everyone had helped keep it a secret from Emma, right down to keeping her talking while he changed into his suit on the day. When she turned around he went down on one knee and popped the question in the foyer. Staff have videoed it and it has been a huge hit on Facebook. He said: “Initially she swore at me and all the staff began laughing, but then she said yes.”

Emma said: “I was shocked. I couldn’t speak at all. This will be a turning point for the both of us. I hope to get down to 10 stone and have chosen a few dresses I like but we will see nearer the time.”

They are considering a church blessing and renewal of vows on August 13, 2016, when they will be joined by children Hannah, 7, and Kayden, 4, as well as Emma’s dad who she has only recently found again after 26 years.

The pair ran the Billingborough 5k this year and have signed up to do the Airfield Anarchy Afterburner assault course at Newark.
