Mum-in-law longs to be back in Bonner House

EDITOR – I was sorry to read about the proposed closure of Bonner House.

My mother-in-law at 91 years old was in Bonner House for a very long stay during the past year. The care was excellent and she felt safe.

The bedrooms were just across a corridor from the bathrooms and so close that it was easily accessible.

The grounds were well used in summer and the day centre, with different activities, was very well attended. The staff were very attentive and kind.

She has now been sent home, although the staff said she would never manage on her own as she was in a wheelchair for most of her stay and suffering from a blockage that caused her great distress and incontinence.

In stark contrast, from 24 hour care she now has just four daily visits.

One carer to help her up in the morning and dress and give her a strip wash as she is unable to use the bath. That carer is allotted 45 minutes in the morning. This is to get her breakfast as well.

Then the lunch time carer has just 15 minutes to prepare a meal and take her to the bathroom to change her pad and then 15 minutes again at teatime. Bedtime is 20 minutes.

The council has decided that she will need a wet room but when I asked where she could go for a week while the work is carried out I was told she would stay at home – a one bedroom flat – as it won’t take long!

The council has obviously never had builders in!

The care at home is not there when needed and I cannot see how can it be costing less to the authorities when big renovations have to be done and private firms are charging the councils?

From being a lively lady doing her own shopping and enjoying her bingo several nights a week, she now sits alone and cries or sleeps. What a life!

She longs to be back in Bonner House for the company and feeling of safety but was devastated to read the front page of the Standard and she is not alone.

The cost of this token care must exceed the cost of having them all under one roof and the peace of mind to the elderly is worth more than that.
