Success can only be achieved with community support

EDITOR - The interest in the proposed closure of the Southgate East railway crossing, culminating in a recent town poll, showed the strength of feeling against the closure.

But what is it in the town centre that we wish to access? Supermarkets are just part of our access requirements but we also need to use the wider community services that Sleaford provides.

Our young people, for example, whose future skills we will depend on, are supported by excellent schools and out of school activities. Students of all ages, and all those working in this vital sector, need access to them.

In Moneys Yard there is a combined, recently refurbished, Sleaford Children’s and Youth Centre which forms part of what Lincolnshire County Council describes as a positive working example of supporting 0-19 year-olds.

Well fine, but this is against a backdrop of cutbacks for which the core offer may only form part of what is required for Sleaford.

Success can only be achieved, if planned changes go ahead, by a considerable injection of community support for activities that require skill and security clearance. A tall order!

From information provided by LCC, through our own county councillor and Coun Marianne Overton, the concept appears to be an example of the ‘Big Society’ in action.

In the months ahead it is anticipated that key community stakeholders, such as Sleaford Town Council, will be asked to support our community needs. These will include drawing up plans to support sustainable community based provision, for children and young people, within the local area.

So there appears much to be done to put more practical measures into place.

Otherwise the town, in this vital sector alone, may not be able to access and deliver what we need – if at all!

Time appears short.

COUN JOHN CHARLESWORTH

Mayor of Sleaford
