Thanks to a 'knight of the road'

EDITOR – I would like to thank a real 'knight of the road' encountered a couple of weeks ago on the A17, near the B1429.

My partner's mother was celebrating her 90th birthday in Boston, where she grew up, and we were returning to our hotel after driving around RAF Cranwell, where she was stationed during the war.

Our car hit a very large pothole, which caused the nearside tyre to burst and we luckily managed to limp into one of the emergency access gates to the airfield, where we encountered another vehicle suffering the same problem. Just as we were contacting emergency services, a third vehicle pulled in, again with a burst nearside tyre.

The driver of the third car not only changed the wheel of his car but volunteered to change ours and that of the other car.

This gentleman was a true 'knight in shining armour' and, thanks to his kindness and help, all three vehicles were roadworthy within 45 minutes.

We had two elderly ladies in our car, who were fairly shaken by the experience, and the wife of our good Samaritan invited them to shelter from the weather in her car while her husband was changing our wheel.

We were very fortunate to meet such a kind, practical and friendly person, prepared to devote his own time to help others.

He would not give his name and would not take payment for his labours.
