Town council should run toilets at peppercorn rent

EDITOR - The Moneys Yards toilets are obviously important to the people of Sleaford.

This is evident from the concerns that have been expressed in the letter pages of the local papers and elsewhere.

As a newly elected Sleaford representative at both town and district council, I want the best facilities in our town. As a local resident who uses these toilets, I also would like to see Moneys Yard toilets remain open if possible.

But the reported E-petition set up by the leader of Sleaford Town Council on The Central Government website is little more than a diversion in my view. Even with his most optimistic hat on Mr Watson cannot really expect to get the 100,000 signatures which might lead to a debate in Parliament on a closure of a public toilet in Sleaford. If by some miracle 100,000 people were to sign his petition, does Coun Watson think that the MPs in The Commons should really spend their time, with all the important issues facing the country at the moment, debating this issue.

This is a local issue and it has to be sorted locally.

The situation is that North Kesteven District Council, whilst it owns the Moneys Yard toilets, cannot afford to operate them as it has to produce savings across the whole of its area and responsibilities.

Sleaford Town Council does not provide any toilets in the Town, it is in the fortunate position of having a surplus of income because of the better financial management that was introduced a few years ago and the town council’s area of interest is solely Sleaford.

The answer is, surely, that NKDC lets the town council rent the Money Yards toilets at a peppercorn rent and that Sleaford Town Council covers the cost of operating them for the benefit of the people of Sleaford using a small proportion of the taxes that the town council collects from the people of Sleaford each year.
