Traffic priority system at crossing is all wrong
EDITOR – I have to agree with the comments of M Watts in the Standard of January 11 regarding the traffic fiasco at Southgate level crossing.
On Thursday morning, at peak time, it took me 16 minutes to travel less than half a mile from Grantham Road to Handley Monument to join the one way system.
I accept that the level crossing does play its part in the build up of traffic first thing in the morning with the staggered arrival of trains.
However, it is clear that by far the biggest problem is the traffic priority system currently being operated.
Why, oh why have Lincolnshire highways seen fit to give Mareham Lane traffic priority over Southgate and Grantham Road?
As your correspondent said, you rarely see a queue of traffic on Mareham Lane, yet the queues on Southgate and Grantham Road are always long and slow moving.
It has got to the stage when quite a number of motorists from Grantham Road now take the right lane to go up Mareham Lane and then turn around in the Aldi car park to get into town more quickly via the Mareham Lane traffic lights.
That is surely not an ideal situation.
When will someone in highways take notice and do something to improve the situation?
