War memorial desecrated by dog mess

EDITOR - Many readers will have noticed that Sleaford’s fine war memorial in Market Place is looking worse for wear and in need of some specialist care and attention.

The good news is that the town council, with the aid of expertise from Lincolnshire Heritage Trust, has started on a project to repair the base and clean the memorial.

Hopefully and before the end of 2012, the memorial can once again provide a fitting symbol of Sleaford’s appreciation for the servicemen and women who have sacrificed their lives for the benefit of others.

The bad news is that, whilst preparing the memorial for an expert survey, I found that someone had used it to scrape off dog mess from their boot or shoe.

I cannot pretend that such an action is anyway near as bad as some of the desecrations of other memorials we have read about recently but it does highlight that we have still not solved the problem of unwanted dog mess in our town.

The town council tries very hard to ensure that dog mess does not end up on our shoes, buggy wheels, mobility scooters or toddlers’ hands.

Dog bins are well distributed and are emptied regularly by the council’s staff and, believe me, this latter job is not for the faint-hearted.

Dog warden patrols are carried out in potential problem areas and it is worth noting that there is still a £1000 fine for repeat offending owners.

Even with all that, I doubt that we shall ever be completely free from the problem but we dog owners can still do better.

Wouldn’t it be a good news story if we could end this momentous year ahead of us with a clean, smart war memorial and our streets as free of dog waste as is humanly possible?

Both will take some effort but I suggest that they are both worth doing.
