A blooming great weekend

THE annual Sleaford in Bloom open gardens weekend was another success, with the sunny weather drawing many visitors to the record number of gardens being shown.

Altogether, 19 gardens and allotments in the town were open to the public and raised funds for the Sleaford in Bloom group to help towards to cost planting and watering the town's floral displays.

One gardener, Pauline Dobson of The Drove, counted over 90 people through her garden on Sunday alone.

Some gardens also sold teas and plants to raise cash for other charities, such as GIFTS Hospice, which also opened its gardens and proved so popular that it ran out of tickets on the first day.

Organiser of the open gardens weekend Maureen Bramley said not all money had yet been collected.

She said: "The event had a lovely atmosphere, with many local people taking to the streets to tour the gardens dotted around the town.

"We have spoken to two of the new gardeners who have not been involved before who thought it was great and the allotments seemed to be having a party during the weekend."

Children were able to follow a picture trail around the gardens for prizes linked to Armed Forces Day on Sunday.

Mrs Bramley said some visitors walked, other families biked around or brought their dogs. Most seemed to stagger their visits over both days due to the growing number of gardens that were taking part, with many people giving donations above the cost of the entry tickets towards the cause.
