Amy Winehouse's former mother-in-law fails to turn up for drink-drive sentence appeal

Friday 5.45pm - THE former mother-in-law of singer Amy Winehouse had her appeal against her sentence for drink driving thrown out after she failed to appear for a hearing at Lincoln Crown Court.

Georgette Civil, 44, of High Street, Ruskington, pleaded guilty to the offence when she appeared before Grantham Magistrates last month when she was fined 600 with a 15 victim surcharge and 565 prosecution costs.

Civil lodged an appeal on the basis that the financial penalty was excessive but she did not attend the hearing today (Friday).

Judge Robert Brown, sitting with two magistrates, dismissed the appeal in her absence and ordered her to pay 100 costs on top of her original penalty.

The Judge said: "If an appellant cannot be bothered to attend court then the appeal is dismissed."

The charge follows an incident in September 2009 when Civil was breathalysed by officers while driving near to Grantham Police Station.
