A SLEAFORD girl is preparing to make a big splash to raise money for a charity set up to help people suffering from a debilitating spinal condition.
Eighteen-year-old Beth Haywood will be taking part in a sponsored swim on Wednesday, February 15 to support a new charity, Scolio Fundraise, with the hope of raising enough money to give it registered charity status.
Beth, who was diagnosed with congenital scoliosis, a curvature of the spine, at just four months old, will be joined on the swim by friends who also have scoliosis.
Beth and the team are planning to swim as many lengths as possible between 12.30pm and 5pm at North Kesteven Centre in North Hykeham. She is aiming to do the whole four and half hours from start to finish.
She said: “We ideally need to raise £5,000 for Scolio Fundraise to become a registered charity.
“I’m really looking forward to doing the swim. I’ve been training a little bit but I swim often anyway so I won’t train too hard.”
Beth had metal titanium rods inserted into her back to straighten her spine when she was two years old. Now her back is straightened but she has opted to keep the rods in her back to avoid another operation in the future.
In May, Beth and the team are also planning to take part in the 19 mile Great Nottinghamshire Bike Ride to help raise money for the Scoliosis campaign fund.
