Co-op staff flying the flag in 425-mile charity relay

HUNDREDS of staff at Lincolnshire Co-operative will be skipping, hula hooping, rollerskating and even pushing trolleys on sections of a mammoth 425-mile relay organised to raise money for good causes.

The Flying the Flag relay is taking place from Tuesday, June 26 until Saturday July 7 and will involve members of staff carrying a special flag around every one of Lincolnshire Co-op’s 75 foodstores.

Teams from each store will be joined on the relay by colleagues from surrounding outlets, such as post offices, travel branches, pharmacies and home stores. All the teams are being encouraged to find weird and wonderful ways of travelling to the next stage of the relay but they cannot use any motorised transport.

Methods dreamed up to complete the course include horse and carts, tandem bicycles, wheelbarrows, juggling, egg and spoon, cycling and running.

At Lincoln Road Foodstore in Sleaford they will be travelling the four miles to Ruskington Foodstore on a tandem bicycle.

The team at Ruskington Foodstore will then make their way to Metheringham Foodstore, seven miles away, while having an egg and spoon race in fancy dress.

Karen Howseman, Ruskington Foodstore community liaison representative, said: “We’re dressing up in pink wigs and tutus because we thought we’d be a bit different. We didn’t want to just walk so we’re doing an egg and spoon race, using real eggs, so we’ve got to try and get all the way there without breaking them. It’s going to be a good laugh.”

Money raised will go towards Lincolnshire Co-op’s two charities for 2012 - Plan UK and Pascal.
