Coach firm’s celebrity passengers at Games

A SLEAFORD firm has been involved in transporting VIPs for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Sleafordian Coaches were chosen to transport a number of leading celebrities during the Olympics, including Dame Kelly Holmes, rapper Dizzee Rascal, Dame Mary Peters, gold-medal winning swimmer Duncan Goodhew, Haile Gebrselassie, The Arctic Monkeys, Mike Oldfield and the seven athletes who lit the Olympic torch on the opening ceremony.

Hannah Broughton, of Sleafordian Coaches, said: “The experience was a huge honour for us, and we are very proud to be able to say that we played our part in London 2012.”

One of Sleafordian’s drivers, Alex Green, recalled the experience, saying: “The main Olympic depot at London Heathrow was the main base for coach drivers for the duration of the Games, and it had enough spaces for 500 vehicles.

“Instantly, I became aware of the enormous operation ahead.

“There was no hanging around, as within a couple of hours of arriving, I was on a coach learning routes in and around East London and the Olympic park.

“We then recieved further information that it would be Sleafordian Coaches which would be carrying headline acts, who would be taking a major role in the opening ceremony.

“This was a real honour, as only two other coach companies were given this role.

“When the opening ceremony began, Sleafordian Coaches were positioned directly under the Olympic stadium as the party was in full swing.

“We had the honour of taking people such as Dame Kelly Homes, Dame Mary Peters, Duncan Goodhew and Haile Gebrselassie.

“It was a great experience and one to be remembered for future years.”
