Crowds throng to record-breaking show

RECORDS were shattered at this year's Heckington Show as thousands of people came from all over the country to England's largest village show at the weekend.

Organisers estimated that more than 25,000 people visited the event over the two days, a big increase on last year, with advance tickets completely sold out beforehand.

Show chairman Charles Pinchbeck said on Sunday: "The show has gone fantastically well and we are so pleased.

"We have had 20 per cent more horticultural stands this year and have had record entries for the children's running race as well - we had around 150 children taking part.

"This is what the show is all about. It is a fantastic village day out for all the family and the chance to participate in all we have to offer."

The opening day of the show on Saturday boasted a full day of events and attractions for visitors to enjoy, with senior and junior cycle races, children's running races, athletics and terrier racing.

The Royal Artillery parachute display team also dropped into the main arena from the sky to delight the awaiting crowds.

Saturday concluded with a grand fireworks concert featuring the Sleaford Concert Band and the Humberside Police Band, with more than 2,000 people in the audience.

The action and the entertainment didn't let up on Sunday, with the huge second day crowds well entertained by an impressive show jumping programme in the main arena, the City of Coventry Corps of Drums Marching Band, Vintage Tractor Drive and The Flying Gunners Royal Artillery Motorcycle Display Team.

Outside of the main ring there was plenty to keep every member of the family enthralled, with over 250 trade stands, craft stands, food hall, traditional fairground, horticulture marquee, an antiques tent, livestock and plenty of shopping opportunities.
