Mr Roberston died at home in Leasingham on Saturday, April 2, aged 85, following two years of illness.

Remembered as a real character with an incisive talent for public service and dedication to his democratic duties, he was greatly respected by all who worked alongside him – both in local government and agriculture as owner of the Roxholme Estates farming enterprise.

He even played a significant role in supporting and representing councillors of all political affiliations within Northern Ireland on visits there during his many years in office as a very well-respected President of the National Association of Councillors.

Council Leader Coun Marion Brighton said this was one of the many aspects of Mr Robertson’s work, which drew admiration and respect locally, regionally and nationally.

“He was a highly respected councilor throughout the whole county and further afield through his Presidency of the National Association,” she said.

“The council meant everything to him, he was absolutely dedicated to North Kesteven and took great care in all that he did to fairly represent his ward and do the best for the wider district. For Euan it was not something to fit into his spare time.

“He was a fine chap and one of life’s characters; very astute, affable, kind and generous in all that he did. A very good councilor and superb chairman who was universally well thought of,” said Coun Brighton.

Mr Robertson’s 46 years as a local councillor representing Leasingham and Roxholm began in 1961 with 11 years of service on East Kesteven Rural Council.

He joined the new North Kesteven District Council at its inception in 1974, serving for 33 years until stepping down in 2007 – at which point he received a gift and standing ovation from his fellow members.

During this time he also served four years as a Kesteven County Councillor and five on Lincolnshire County Council.

At North Kesteven he was vice-chairman three times, in the years 1976-77, 1979-80, 1990-91 and Chairman of the Council from 1977-79 and then again from 1991-1993.

He was a part of the NK Independents Group and served on numerous committees and panels as well as representing the council on many outside bodies.

Council Chief Executive Ian Fytche said that almost a decade after Mr Robertson left the council, he was still fondly remembered for his dedication, wit and spirit.

“He gave long and loyal service which is reflected on with warmth and gratitude by colleagues and members who remember him well,” said Mr Fytche.

“He was a real character who did not speak for the sake of speaking but when he did, his comments were always very pertinent and valid and contributed positively to strong debate and solid decisions.”

An only child, he leaves no family, but will be remembered with great fondness by some good friends and very dedicated employees from his Roxholme Estates farming enterprise.

A private cremation will follow.

There will be a memorial service at a later date.
