Friends plan charity single in memory of Nathan
WHEN 14-year-old Nathan Cook died from acute myeloid leukaemia on December 28, his friends and family were understandably devastated and grief-stricken.
Now his classmates at St George’s Academy and students at Carre’s Grammar School and Kesteven and Sleaford High School are planning to release a charity single in his memory.
They held their first meeting after school on Thursday to discuss the single, with the students brainstorming musical arrangements and deciding on who would take on what role in the music making process.
A basic melody has already been put down by Year 11 students at St George’s, Sammy Fernandes and Chloe Tudor, and Chloe is heading up the music side of things for the single. Recording will take place at the beginning of March.
One idea put forward was to do a Band Aid style single, having the students singing as a group with a few solo sections.
Chloe explained: “We are going for meaningful and deep verses with references to Nathan’s life that have an upbeat background tone.
“We’re planning for a big build-up and an overall ‘united and together’ sound at the chorus, that also has a Band Aid vibe.”
The group is co-ordinated by Nathan’s friends, St George’s Year 11 students Matthew Waldeck and Natalie Willetts, who came up with the idea for a charity single between them.
Matthew suggested a fund-raiser of some description and Natalie suggested putting the musical talents of their peers to good use.
Matthew said: “We really hope that this will become something big to raise plenty of money.”
Once the single is complete, the students will sell copies of it on CD to begin with and hope to later sell it on iTunes, with proceeds going to cancer charities.
