Future of town play area to be raised
Tuesday 1.30pm - TOWN councillors are looking at redeveloping one of Sleaford's largest open play areas.
Deputy mayor Jack Collings is due to put a number of radical suggestions to the council's Strategy Committee tomorrow night (Wednesday) for discussion which could see part of Woodside playing field sold off to developers for affordable housing, generating cash to make improvements to the remainder of the play area including new play equipment and so on.
Coun Collings told the Standard: "I am just floating a few balloons of ideas. The council has been a state of complete apathy, unable to make any decision. As councillors we ought to push ideas forward, however radical."
He said these were not firm proposals but merely a starting pointfor discussions around a largely under-used asset with only a piece of redundant equipment on it needing updating.
He added: "We must not lose our open areas, that is important and we would get a huge reaction from the public, but you cannot disguise the fact that area has huge potential and we are not tapping into it."
Coun Collings suggested working in partnership with North Kesteven District Council to push forward the ideas.
Coun John Charlesworth, who has pushed for improvements to be made to the Woodside play area, the second largest in Sleaford after Boston Road, said he was glad to hear the matter being raised and hoped it would be looked at within the wider needs of the community of Holdingham.
He said: "Woodside would be next to be refurbished but it is an under-utilised area. The main problem is the only entrance is off Beech Rise which is very narrow. You would have to demolish a house to get better access. This has been mooted for a long time."
The meeting at Carre's Grammar School starts at 7.30pm.
