Head calling it a day after 25 years at Chestnut Street School

WHEN headteacher Christine Breckon walks out of the gates of her school on the final day of term it will conclude the final chapter in a 25 year association with the school.

Mrs Breckon, who is to retire, has been headteacher of Chestnut Street School in Ruskington for the past four years. Prior to that she was the deputy head for 12 years and before that a teacher at the school.

She said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed all my time at the school and these past four years as headteacher have been very special.

"I never dreamt I would actually become head. I was the deputy to the previous head Chris Petz for 12 years and I thoroughly enjoyed working with Chris. It was a great partnership.

"When he decided to take early retirement, I then became headteacher and these past four years have presented me with far more challenges than I could ever have imagined. But it has been a wonderful time and the incredible camaraderie among the school staff and the pleasure of working with so many children have always helped so much.

"I have worked with five chairmen of governors and I have had immense support from them and our governors and for that I will be eternally grateful."

During her 25 years at Chestnut Street School, Mrs Breckon has served in many capacities but one of which she is particularly proud is her work on special needs provision at the school.

"It is in that area where I felt I made the most impact at the school and I am very proud of our commitment to the 'Every Child Matters' agenda," she said.

Now, as she enters her final fortnight at the school, Mrs Breckon is quick to praise her staff.

"They have been fabulous and I have had the good fortune of working with an excellent leadership team. My deputy head Simon Morley has been a star, and an excellent support to me. I wish him every success as he now moves on himself to headship in September."

This year saw one of the highlights of her teaching career when the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, visited Chestnut Street School in March.

S

he will miss the contact with the children and staff at the school but admitted: "I won't miss the amount of bureaucracy that headteachers now have to deal with.

"The biggest change for me will be the fact that for the first time since the age of five my life will not revolve around the cycle of the school year."
