The Health and Safety Executive has been investigating after a man was hospitalised in an accident on a work site near Sleaford.

The incident happened at around 5.30pm on Thursday at the site of the new straw burning renewable energy plant, currently being constructed off Boston Road at Kirkby la Thorpe.

Fire and rescue crews from Sleaford, Grantham and Billingborough were all on the scene to help the casualty, who is not from the Sleaford area.

A spokesman for Eco2, the firm behind the project, said that the accident happened when a crane lifted equipment into a position near the boiler house and moved unexpectedly.

He went on: “A contracted worker was involved in an accident on site during the installation of conveying equipment which will take straw bales into the furnace once in operation.

“The equipment moved unexpectedly whilst being jacked into position and came into contact with the worker, who is from the Blackpool
area.

“He was then taken to Lincoln County Hospital where he is being treated for minor abdominal injuries including a fractured rib, as well as an ankle injury. He remains in a comfortable position in hospital.”

Eco2 stated it was conducting their own investigation into what happened.

The project was granted planning permission in November 2008 and construction began in May last year, and will generate power using technology specifically designed for the clean burning of straw, creating 38MWe, equivilant power to 65,000 houses.

The plant, when it is constructed, will hopefully provide a district heating system to Sleaford Football Club, Sleaford Bowls Club and Sleaford Leisure Centre and negotiations for the second phase would see the waste heat serve North Kesteven District Council offices and the William Alvey Primary School.
